Earthworks, grading
and yard drainage

A yard that drains toward the house, a lawn stuck in a low spot, grass that never takes: all of it gets fixed through the ground. We grade, we calculate slopes, we drain — then finish in pavers, sod or artificial turf.

What we do

  • Grading and drainage slopes — the basic rule: water must move away from the foundation, never back toward it.
  • Yard drainage: surface drains, dry wells and low-spot corrections that keep a lawn soaked.
  • Site preparation after construction or demolition: mass grading, topsoil, finish ready to seed or sod.

Why slope matters as much as the finish

A beautiful surface that sends water toward the house undoes everything done to the foundation. Every earthworks project is designed with a slope away from the building — and when the lot doesn’t allow it, we build in a surface drain.

Our method

  1. Level survey. We measure the yard’s actual elevations, low points and water behaviour. Slopes are calculated, not guessed.
  2. Soil correction. Unstable soil removed, granular material or topsoil brought in per intended use, compacted in layers.
  3. Integrated drainage. Surface drains and outlets positioned before the finish, not as an afterthought.
  4. Finish. Paving stones, sod, seed, artificial turf or decorative stone — on a base that won’t move.

Frequently asked

My yard is soaked every spring. Can it be fixed?
Almost always. It’s either a low spot (grading correction), soil that doesn’t percolate (surface drain or dry well), or the neighbour’s runoff (interception at the property line). The level survey tells us which — and often it’s a combination.
What slope does a house need?
The general rule is a minimum slope of about 2% away from the foundation over the first few metres. On a small city lot, that sometimes comes from a surface drain rather than the slope alone.
Can I sod right after the earthworks?
Yes — it’s actually the best time. We finish the grading with raked topsoil, and the sod goes down within days, before rain can carve the surface.
